Damascus, July 12 (SANA) President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Sunday called on members of Syria’s newly formed People’s Assembly to make the legislature a model of responsibility, competence and institutional governance, urging lawmakers to promote dialogue, uphold the rule of law and help build a modern Syrian state.
Speaking at the assembly’s inaugural session, President al-Sharaa said humanity had long sought the best way to govern public affairs, stressing that consultation and consensus remained the most effective means of achieving the common good.
“There is no better path than consultation and consensus,” he said, adding that “mutual acceptance is essential to overcoming division, resolving differences and reaching sound judgment.”
The president said Syria was entering a new chapter in its history that reflected its civilization, values and heritage, while emphasizing that the country’s future depended on placing the national interest above all else.
President al-Sharaa said the legacy of years of authoritarian rule, war and destruction had left deep challenges affecting the country’s people, infrastructure and economy, requiring collective action, public service and a renewed commitment to state-building.
“Syria is writing a new chapter in its history,” President al-Sharaa said. “We now face a shared responsibility to build our nation and place the national interest above all else.”
The president said that following the country’s liberation and the restoration of its freedom, Syria was entering a phase focused on strengthening state institutions on the principles of responsibility and competence.
He said rebuilding the economy, improving public services, creating an attractive investment climate, generating employment and increasing production were national priorities requiring the participation of all state institutions, with the People’s Assembly playing a central role through legislation that supports reconstruction, meets the aspirations of Syrians and advances development and prosperity.
President al-Sharaa urged lawmakers to uphold high standards in carrying out their duties and to reinforce confidence in public institutions.
“I urge you to make this assembly a model of responsibility and competence, and to help foster a culture of dialogue, the rule of law and respect for institutions,” he said.
The president concluded by expressing hope that the assembly would serve as “a forum for wisdom, a pillar of the state and the voice of the people” as Syria works toward a prosperous future.
The People’s Assembly convened its inaugural session earlier on Sunday, during which members took the constitutional oath. Lawmakers are expected to elect the assembly’s speaker, two deputy speakers and a secretary by secret ballot. The assembly is also required to adopt its rules of procedure within one month of its first sitting.
