Damascus, June 26 (SANA) Interior Minister Anas Khattab pledged on Friday that Syria would continue combating drug trafficking through all legitimate means to achieve a “Drug-Free Syria.”
In a statement marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Khattab said Syria remained committed to confronting the growing threat posed by narcotics.
“We reaffirm to our people, and to all countries in the region and around the world, that we will continue confronting this dangerous scourge through all legitimate means, with the goal of achieving a ‘Drug-Free Syria,'” Khattab said.
He added that restoring Syria’s role as “a beacon of knowledge and progress” would require cooperation at both the national and international levels, calling for joint efforts at home and abroad to combat drugs.
The minister stressed that “combating drugs is a national, moral and international duty.”
The statement comes as Syrian authorities have stepped up counter-narcotics operations, including efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and Captagon production sites, as part of a broader campaign against illicit drug manufacturing and smuggling.
Earlier on Friday, Drug Enforcement Department Director Brig. Gen. Khaled Eid said that since the liberation, authorities had carried out 1,550 operations, dismantled 90 international trafficking networks and shut down 17 Captagon factories.
Seizures included 697 million Captagon pills, 15 tonnes of hashish, 10 million narcotic pills, 180 kilograms of cocaine, 84.5 kilograms of crystal meth, 7 kilograms of heroin and 221 tonnes of chemical precursors.
According to a UNODC report, large-scale Captagon production in Syria was disrupted by December 2025, with authorities dismantling 15 manufacturing sites and 13 storage facilities since December 2024.
