National Earthquake Center: Earthquakes in northern occur by the tectonic nature of the region

Damascus, June 13 (SANA)- The National Earthquake Center at the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management affirmed that the earthquake recorded at dawn Saturday northwest of Aleppo, with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, falls within the region’s normal seismic activity and does not cause concern.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the center explained that the recurrence of tremors in northern and northwestern Syria is due to the tectonic nature of the area, which is historically considered an active seismic zone.

As a result, weak to moderate tremors are recorded continuously and may occasionally be felt by residents.

The center considered that these tremors fall within the region’s known normal seismic activity and that there is no cause for concern.

It also pointed out that the latest earthquake occurred along the East Anatolian Fault, as a result of the continued redistribution of stress along this fault, noting that its shallow depth contributed to it being felt more clearly by residents.

Northern Syria and southern Turkey are among the most seismically active areas due to their location within the collision zone of several tectonic plates, which leads to frequent earthquakes of varying intensities.

The National Earthquake Center of the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management recorded an earthquake at 12:10 after midnight (June 13), with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, northwest of Aleppo, 86 km away, at a depth of 7.5 km.
