Damascus Countryside, June 12 (SANA)    Syria’s Interior Ministry said Friday it had responded, in coordination with the National Commission for Missing Persons (NCMP), to a report of a mass grave discovered in the town of Sednaya containing the remains of opposition fighters killed during the western Qalamoun battles in 2014 against militias of the deposed regime.

Internal security forces established a security cordon around the site to protect the location, preserve evidence and ensure the area remains undisturbed until legal procedures are completed, the ministry told SANA.

Specialized teams are taking required measures to document information and collect evidence in preparation for further search and investigation work, the ministry said, adding that it is committed to preserving the dignity of the victims and pursuing the case to achieve justice and uncover the truth.

The ministry extended its condolences to the families of the martyrs, stating that determining the fate of victims, protecting their rights and holding those responsible for these crimes accountable remain a national and moral duty.

Earlier Friday, the National Commission for Missing Persons said it had conducted an initial field assessment in Sednaya town in response to reports from residents about suspected burial sites or mass graves, to determine the technical, logistical and legal requirements for handling them according to professional standards.

In recent months, authorities have discovered mass graves in several areas of Syria containing the remains of hundreds of people who killed as a result of the criminal practices of the deposed regime and its allies during the years of the revolution.
