Damascus, April 30 (SANA) Syria climbed 36 places in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Thursday, marking one of the largest gains in this year’s rankings.
RSF said Syria ranked 141st in 2026, up from 177th in 2025.
In its report, the organization attributed the improvement to changes following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorial regime, noting that Syria recorded notable progress across the index’s five indicators: political, economic, legislative, social and security.
The report highlighted in particular improvements in the legal framework governing media work, describing it as a key factor in enhancing conditions for journalists.
RSF added that the gains come after years in which Syria faced serious violations against journalists.
