Damascus, March 30 (SANA) – President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s visits to Germany and the United Kingdom mark a new phase in Syria’s engagement with Europe, reflecting growing diplomatic contacts and efforts to expand political and economic cooperation.
European countries have gradually increased engagement with Damascus following developments in Syria in late 2024, with several European delegations visiting the country and holding talks with Syrian officials.
Diplomatic exchanges intensified in early 2025 when the foreign ministers of Germany and France visited Damascus, followed by additional European delegations exploring ways to strengthen relations and support Syria’s recovery.
President al-Sharaa also visited France in May 2025, where he met President Emmanuel Macron. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral ties, with Macron expressing support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and discussing the possibility of easing European sanctions.
The growing engagement continued during the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York last September, where al-Sharaa held discussions with several European leaders on developing relations and supporting reconstruction efforts.
Further meetings took place during international gatherings later in the year, including talks with European leaders on the sidelines of the UN climate summit in Belém, Brazil.
Officials say the president’s current visits to Germany and the United Kingdom are part of a broader diplomatic effort to deepen cooperation with European partners and encourage economic engagement and investment in Syria’s reconstruction.
Syrian officials have said the country seeks balanced international relations based on mutual interests and cooperation.
