Aleppo, March 26 (SANA) Civil Defense teams in northern Syria are continuing field operations to reinforce earthen berms in flood-prone areas of Idlib and Aleppo, to reduce risks after rising water levels.
According to statements posted on its Telegram channel on Wednesday, teams conducted field assessments to identify weak points in the berms, particularly at Sabkhat al-Sayha in the Abu al-Duhur area, where water levels have been steadily increasing. Emergency measures were implemented to strengthen vulnerable sections.
As a precaution, three families were evacuated from the village of al-Waseeta al-Sharqiya to nearby villages, while gravel was laid along the al-Husseiniyah–al-Tuwem road to prepare it as a safe evacuation route, since it serves as a key access point for several surrounding communities.
In a related development, the General Authority for the Management and Development of al-Ghab declared a state of alert after an earthen berm south of Aleppo collapsed on March 20 following heavy rainfall and increased flow from the Queiq River. The incident led to flooding of approximately 600 hectares of agricultural land.
Authority director Abdulaziz al-Qasim said technical teams and machinery are working around the clock to reinforce the berm and repair damaged sections, in coordination with the Water Resources Directorate and other relevant bodies, in preparation for further weather impacts.
Following the incident, an emergency response committee was formed in the Abu al-Duhur area, bringing together representatives from emergency services, agriculture, water resources, and the Ministry of Defense to ensure rapid response and reduce risks to nearby villages.
