SDF targeting of university housing in Aleppo is a crime against humanity- Minister

Damascus, Jan. 9 (SANA) Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi strongly condemned the attack on the fifth unit of the university housing complex in the city of Aleppo, following the impact of an artillery shell fired by the SDF organization stationed in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods. The shelling caused material damage to one of the student facilities, without resulting in any injuries.

In a press statement, Minister al-Halabi affirmed that targeting university housing and educational facilities constitutes an explicit crime against humanity and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and established international norms, which mandate the protection of education and its institutions from conflicts and hostilities.

The minister stressed that the safety of students and the protection of educational institutions are a red line, holding the SDF organization fully responsible for the attack. He called on the international community and relevant organizations to uphold their moral and legal responsibilities and to take action to halt the violations that target the sanctity of education in Syria.
