New York, March 19 (SANA) The Syrian mission to the United Nations in New York, in partnership with the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Turkey, Qatar and Canada, launched a high-level initiative named “Breaths of Freedom”, an international task force led by Syria aimed at eliminating any remaining chemical weapons from the era of the deposed regime.
Syria’s permanent UN envoy, Ibrahim Olabi, told SANA that the launch comes at a historic moment coinciding with the fifteenth anniversary of the Syrian revolution and a UN Security Council session on Syria’s political and humanitarian situation. He noted that Syria, previously treated as a suspect under the deposed regime, now leads seven countries in resolving the chemical weapons file.

Olabi added that these countries support Syria in eliminating the chemical weapons legacy after observing the Syrian people’s courage and commitment over the past months.
In remarks to the Syrian News Channel, Olabi explained that the name “Breaths of Freedom” symbolizes Syrians reclaiming their breath after years of chemical threats and violations of their freedom, political rights and human rights, emphasizing that Syria today enjoys broad international support.

He noted that the chemical weapons file is among the most challenging due to its secrecy and potential risks to the population if mishandled. Multiple coordination teams and countries are complementing Syrian government efforts on the ground, bringing expertise in destruction, detection, transport and security. Numerous international meetings on this issue are planned to be held in Syria.
The Breaths of Freedom task force includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Turkey, Germany, Canada and France.
