Damascus, March 10 (SANA) Syria’s Defense Ministry said Monday it has launched a comprehensive evaluation of Syrian Arab Army officers as part of efforts to reform and modernize the military institution.
The ministry said the process will assess thousands of officers holding leadership positions across various branches, including brigade, battalion and company commanders. Specialized committees have been formed to conduct the evaluations to ensure accuracy and fairness.
According to the ministry, the assessments will be based on objective and professional criteria rather than personal considerations. Officers will undergo tests in areas such as topography, tactics and map-reading, alongside evaluations measuring leadership ability and military knowledge.
The process is being overseen by a senior team headed by Chief of the General Staff Maj. Gen. Ali al-Naasan. Officers without academic qualifications will be allowed to continue their training through structured programs before receiving their military ranks under an approved regulatory framework.
The ministry said the initiative aims to develop the army based on a military doctrine grounded in discipline and the rule of law, ensuring that ranks are granted according to established procedures and that commanders are selected based on competence, experience, specialization and academic qualifications.
The ministry described the evaluation as a key step in restructuring the Syrian Arab Army and moving the military toward a more disciplined and stable phase based on accurate data and fair classification of capabilities.
The move follows the integration of all military units and formations into the Defense Ministry in May last year, including smaller groups that were incorporated into the ministry’s structure.
