Damascus, Feb.23 (SANA) – Preparations for elections to Syria’s People’s Assembly are progressing smoothly in Raqqa province, with electoral arrangements advancing under stable security, political and logistical conditions, committee spokesperson Nawar Najmeh said on Monday.
The Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections said local subcommittees in Raqqa have begun forming electoral colleges through consultations with political and social representatives, as well as by receiving candidacy applications from residents.
Election mechanisms for the Raqqa and al-Tabqa districts were reviewed during a recent field visit by the central committee, with officials stressing adherence to the provisional electoral framework and established appeals procedures applied nationwide.
The committee said electoral bodies would be formed to ensure broad and fair representation across local communities, without formal quota-based allocation, describing inclusive representation as a cornerstone of the country’s political transition.
Once voting procedures in Raqqa are completed, preparations will move to Hasakah and Ain al-Arab in Aleppo province, in an effort to finalize the formation of the new parliament and allow it to convene.
Officials said delays in convening the People’s Assembly were linked to the need to complete elections in northeastern provinces, alongside ongoing implementation of political agreements aimed at strengthening representation and legislative legitimacy.
Raqqa province comprises three electoral districts: Raqqa, al-Tabqa and Tal Abyad, where representatives were elected late last year.
