Damascus, Feb.16 (SANA) Minister of Energy Mohammad al-Bashir said Monday that the shortage recorded over the past few days in domestic cooking gas was the result of severe weather conditions that affected the docking and unloading operations of a gas tanker at the port.
In statements to SANA, al-Bashir stated that technical teams have already commenced unloading the first vessel, while the second tanker is scheduled to be connected within 48 hours. He noted that quantities will start flowing gradually to distribution centers as of tomorrow, with full stability expected across all governorates in the near term.
The minister affirmed that distribution movement will resume to its normal course within the coming hours, as incoming volumes are progressively reflected in supply outlets throughout the country.
Al-Bashir stressed that what occurred was a temporary logistical circumstance beyond operational control, given that gas imports rely on maritime shipments and official tenders that may be impacted by climatic factors.
He added that the ministry is currently working on preparing new storage facilities to enhance the strategic reserve of domestic gas, with the aim of preventing any future bottlenecks and ensuring stable supplies.
The minister emphasized that the ministry’s priority is to stabilize the energy market and provide essential materials to citizens in a sustainable manner, noting that the next phase will focus on structural solutions rather than temporary measures.
He further indicated that specialized teams have been instructed to intensify oversight over distribution centers and markets, prevent any cases of hoarding or manipulation, and take legal measures against violators.
“The material is available,” al-Bashir underscored, warning that any attempt to exploit the temporary situation for unlawful gains will be dealt with firmly.
