Damascus, Feb. 11 (SANA) Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, met with Dutch envoy to Syria, Alexander Geerts, and his accompanying delegation on Wednesday in Damascus to discuss prospects for joint cooperation in infrastructure rehabilitation and recovery efforts, with a particular focus on mine clearance.
The two sides explored the efforts of the National Mine Action Center, stressing that mine clearance is an urgent humanitarian and security priority, essential for protecting civilians and ensuring the safe return of displaced persons.
They also addressed ways to expand areas of cooperation, strengthen national capacities, and establish a structured framework that enhances coordination and translates collaboration into practical outcomes serving Syria’s recovery and stability.
The National Mine Action Center recently organized a national workshop titled “Step of Safety” in cooperation with UNICEF, which ran for four days last month. The workshop focused on raising awareness of explosive ordnance risks and providing victim assistance to survivors and affected families.
Unexploded ordnance and remnants of war from the ousted regime continue to pose a grave threat to Syrian citizens, obstructing their return to their communities and hindering reconstruction and development efforts.
