Syrian Atomic Energy Authority, Gas company discuss safety measures in central fields

Homs, Feb. 8 (SANA) – A delegation from the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority met with officials from the Syrian Gas Company on Sunday to strengthen cooperation on full radiological surveys of wells and gas fields in the central region and to adopt preventive measures aimed at ensuring worker safety and environmental protection.

Deputy CEO for Gas Affairs at the Syrian Petroleum Company, Hisham al-Saleh, told SANA that during the meeting both sides agreed to conduct comprehensive radiological surveys of all wells and equipment across gas-producing areas in the northern and southern parts of the central region, including wells producing gas and formation water and their associated installations.

Al-Saleh said the primary objective of the surveys is to determine safety levels and risk profiles and to implement appropriate measures where potential sources of radiation may exist. He emphasized the importance of establishing preventive strategies to avoid hazards, particularly in areas that have not undergone radiological assessment for nearly 15 years. He stressed that protecting workers and the environment remains a top priority for the Syrian Petroleum Company.

The official in charge of radiation protection at the Atomic Energy Authority’s Oil Affairs Office, Ibrahim Awad, highlighted close cooperation between the Authority and the Syrian Gas Company to evaluate radiological conditions within the company’s facilities. He said an integrated work program and action plan were adopted to cover all company installations, with site visits planned to conduct detailed radiological evaluations. Subsequent reports will include measurement results and identify areas with elevated radiation concentrations within the workplace environment.

Awad said the final report will include practical recommendations and actions to protect employees and mitigate any potential spread of radiation contamination linked to naturally occurring radioactive materials associated with oil-related industrial activities. He noted that the meeting is part of a joint national strategic plan between the two bodies, covering multiple phases and aiming to fully eliminate risks posed by natural radioactive materials connected with oil industry operations throughout the Syrian Arab Republic.
