Red Crescent volunteer killed, others injured during flash flood response in Lattakia

Lattakia, Feb. 8 (SANA) Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall in northern and western Syria have killed a volunteer with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and injured several others during rescue operations in Lattakia countryside.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent said on Sunday that volunteer Samiha Rakhamieh was killed after the vehicle she was traveling in slid into a valley in the Jabal al-Turkman area as teams were responding to flood emergencies. Four other volunteers were injured, sustaining wounds ranging from moderate to severe. Another volunteer was also injured while attempting to rescue a child trapped by floodwaters, the organization said.

The Red Crescent expressed condolences over Rakhamieh’s death, noting that she had more than 12 years of humanitarian service and had taken part in emergency responses to earthquakes and wildfires. She most recently served as a disaster management coordinator in Latakia, the organization said.

On Saturday, two children were killed and a third rescued after severe flooding swept through the Ain Issa area in northern Latakia countryside following heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains across northern and western Syria have triggered flash floods in recent days, inundating tents near seasonal waterways in camps west of Idleb, prompting emergency evacuations and the opening of schools and shelters. Flooding in the Latakia countryside also trapped civilians and cut roads at several locations, authorities said.
