Homs, Feb. 5 (SANA) Syria’s Narcotics Directorate, in direct coordination with Iraq’s General Directorate for Drug and Psychotropic Substances Control, carried out a security operation in Homs province as part of international cooperation to combat cross-border crime.
The Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Thursday that the operation resulted in the arrest of two internationally wanted suspects, one of them is a foreign national, while they were attempting to bring narcotics into the country for onward smuggling abroad.
The ministry explained that the operation was based on highly precise intelligence exchanged and analyzed through international security cooperation channels, and was conducted following close technical and field surveillance of the criminal network’s activities. The smuggling attempt was thwarted and about 300,000 Captagon pills were seized in the suspects’ possession.
The directorate had previously conducted a joint security operation with Iraq on Jan. 15 targeting an international drug-trafficking network, which led to the seizure of about 2.5 million Captagon pills and the arrest of several suspects inside both countries.
