Tartous Governor: Attempts to exploit events for chaos, security measures in place

Tartous, Dec. 28 (SANA) Tartous Governor Ahmed al-Shami confirmed Sunday that today’s incidents in the province are part of ongoing attempts by remnants of the deposed regime to exploit events and stir chaos. He noted that some external parties have been spreading rumors and inciting unrest along the coast since the fall of the deposed regime.

Al-Shami told al-Ikhbariya TV that the so-called Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal tried to use the recent bombing of a mosque in Homs to call for protests, which he said do not serve the victims but instead further foreign agendas aimed at destabilizing the region, especially as the area faces threats from ISIS activities.

The governor emphasized that peaceful demonstrations and freedom of expression are legitimate rights for all Syrians, but exploiting protests to fire weapons, throw explosives, or cause disorder threatens public safety. Coordination with authorities is essential to secure protest locations. For instance, in today’s al-Anaza area, a remnant of the deposed regime threw a grenade at a security center, injuring two personnel, and another individual was caught with two grenades at a checkpoint.

Al-Shami also noted that during a demonstration at al-Saadi Roundabout in Tartous, some parties attempted to fire at security forces. He stressed that in such cases, priority is securing the area first and ensuring the protest ends safely, preventing any attempt to create chaos.

The governor highlighted that since the beginning, he has held repeated meetings with local notables to build trust and develop a common understanding of events. He praised the residents of Tartous for their awareness, wisdom, and commitment to the country’s unity and stability.

Al-Shami concluded by urging citizens to remain vigilant, avoid falling for suspicious calls from abroad aimed at creating unrest, and to rally around the state, rejecting divisive agendas that threaten national security.

Since the fall of the deposed regime, groups linked to its remnants resisted the current political and institutional transition, attempting to incite protests under divisive slogans, often using civilian demonstrations as a cover to target security forces and damage public property.
