Tartous, SANA-The beauty of natural, archaeological features, tourist services, and stunning views that Mashta al-Helou town enjoys makes it one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Syria.
Mashta al-Helou in Tartous countryside is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Syria, and it is considered the most favorite one for Arab and foreign tourists, as it has Al Dawayat Cave, a giant tree, “Dalbat al-Mashta”, and Al-Sayydah mountain.
The mayor of Mashta al-Helou, Joseph Eid, told SANA reporter that the town is about 600 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by green hills and volcanic mountains, and is adjacent to several historical castles such as the Solomon’s Fortress, castle of Al-Hosn or Qala’at Al-Hosn,Burj Safita or Safita Tower , and Masyaf Castle.
He said that it is rich in fresh springs and natural sites that make it a destination for summer and winter tourism.
Eid explained that a small historic church sits atop the town’s Al-Sayydah mountain. The mountain is volcanic in nature, dating back millions of years. It is a popular tourist destination, especially during holidays and special occasions.
Mashta al-Helou is also famous for its ancient 500-year-old giant Dalbah tree, which has become a symbol of the town. Its name is associated with several local sites, such as “Al-Dalbah Square,” “Dalbah Café,” and “Dalbah Spring.”
The town’s name comes from the Syriac language, where the word “Oshti” means a land with many springs, or “Mashto” means a fresh spring, referring to the abundance of its water resources that have earned it widespread fame throughout the ages.
For many years, the tourism sector in Syria suffered from systematic destruction perpetrated by the former regime. Many tourist and archaeological sites were targeted, and hotel and service infrastructure was neglected, leading to a significant decline in tourism activity.
But after the victory of the Syrian revolution and the fall of the former regime on December 8th, the new government placed tourism at the top of its priorities, considering it a key pillar of the national economy.
