The UN renews its commitment to supporting victims of torture in Syria under the former regime

New York, SANA – The Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, Najat Rochdi, affirmed the UN organization’s support for all Syrians who have been subjected to torture and grave violations under the former regime, stressing the need to ensure justice and achieve accountability.

In a post on the “X” platform, on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Rochdi said: “Today, we stand with all Syrians affected by torture, for their courage demands justice and a future in which dignity is restored.” She emphasized that the practices of torture in Syria have been systematic and widespread, amounting to crimes against humanity.

Rochdi emphasized that “there can be no healing without justice, no peace without truth, and no future without accountability,” stressing that the process of political transition and legislative reform must ensure that such crimes are never repeated, as the best way to honor those who gave their lives for the sake of justice.

In another post, Rochdi also noted the steadfastness of Syrian women and their role in the peaceful struggle, and said: “I salute the brave Syrian woman, the fighter and steadfast, the peacemaker and protector of society,” noting the necessity of honoring the Syrian women who raised their voices loudly to demand freedom, civil rights, and the release of political detainees.
