Rabat, May 25 (SANA) South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns won their second CAF Champions League title on Sunday after drawing 1-1 with Morocco’s FAR Rabat in the second leg to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Sundowns, who carried a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, fell behind in the 40th minute when Mohamed Hrimat converted a penalty after Reda Slim was fouled by Divine Lunga.
Teboho Mokoena equalized just before halftime with a shot that struck the underside of the crossbar, restoring Sundowns’ aggregate lead.
FAR Rabat earned another penalty in the second half after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams fouled Youssef El Fahli, but Williams saved Hrimat’s effort to keep the South African side in front overall.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said he remained confident his team would find a goal despite conceding first.
“After the first penalty, I still felt that at any moment we could score,” Cardoso said. “Overall, we deserved to win.”
The title was Sundowns’ second continental crown following their 2016 triumph and came after losing last year’s final to Egypt’s Pyramids FC. FAR Rabat previously won the competition in 1985.
