London, March 11 (SANA) Bayern Munich moved closer to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after a dominant 6–1 victory over Atalanta in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie on Tuesday.

Barcelona, meanwhile, secured a late 1–1 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, while Atletico Madrid recorded a convincing 5–2 home win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle appeared on course for victory after Harvey Barnes put the hosts ahead in the 86th minute. But Barcelona salvaged a draw deep into stoppage time when Lamine Yamal converted a penalty, leaving the Spanish side in a strong position ahead of the second leg.

In Madrid, Atletico overwhelmed Tottenham with an early attacking burst. Marcos Llorente opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Antoine Griezmann, Julián Álvarez and Robin Le Normand added further goals during a dominant first half.

Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke scored for Tottenham, but Álvarez netted again to complete Atletico’s fifth goal of the night.

Bayern delivered one of the standout results of the evening in Bergamo. Josip Stanišić opened the scoring before Michael Olise struck twice. Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson and Jamal Musiala also found the net to give the German side a commanding advantage.

Mario Pašalić scored Atalanta’s only goal in stoppage time.
