New York, Sept. 22 (SANA) Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani affirmed Tuesday that his country stands with Syria during its recovery, reiterating support for its sovereignty, independence and unity.
In his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Sheikh Tamim said Qatar stands with the Syrian people as the country moves through recovery and reconstruction, supporting state institutions as well as Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and national and territorial unity.
Turning to the situation in the Gulf region, Sheikh Tamim said current conditions were the cumulative result of years of postponing solutions and managing crises through temporary measures and unrealistic policies.
“The essence of the dangerous situation we are witnessing is the absence of a regional collective security system that respects the sovereignty, integrity and territorial unity of states, encourages the peaceful settlement of disputes and rejects interference in their internal affairs,” he said.
He stressed the need to resolve the Gulf crisis through diplomatic means, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz to navigation and returning to negotiations.
On Gaza, the Qatari Emir said what had happened there amounted to “genocide in every sense of the word” and was “a stain on the conscience of all humanity,” adding that future generations would be astonished by the scale of the gap between the catastrophe and the international response to halt it.
He said the international community bears a direct responsibility to push for implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza.
Sheikh Tamim also said the continued oppression, apartheid and settler violence in the West Bank, violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the denial of Palestinian rights, foremost among them the right to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, remained “an open wound.”
He said the international community’s handling of Israel and its conduct was a test of its commitment to upholding international values and the rule of law.
The Emir also reiterated Qatar’s support for UN efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen based on the outcomes of the UN-sponsored National Dialogue Conference, in a way that preserves Yemen’s unity and sovereignty and promotes security and stability.
