Ankara, July 10 (SANA) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the policies pursued by the current Israeli government pose a direct threat to the region and international security, while warning against attempts to obstruct Syria’s progress and stability.
In an interview with “The National” following the NATO summit in Ankara, Fidan said Türkiye is “not convinced that Israel wants to see a stable, strong and developed Syria.”
He added that European leaders began to recognize the scale of the threat posed by Israeli policies, but had yet to develop a clear mechanism to address it.
Asked whether Israel was seeking to destabilize the Syrian state, Fidan said the Israeli government’s past and present conduct toward countries in the region pointed in that direction.
He added that the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government had become a burden and a threat to regional and international security, while ruling out any justification for open conflict or direct confrontation.
Turning to the situation in the Gaza Strip, Fidan said the Gaza Peace Council played an effective role in efforts to halt war of genocide, but that the plan had yet to deliver the desired results, particularly in relation to humanitarian aid.
He stressed the need for greater international pressure to ensure the flow of aid to Palestinians.
Fidan also said several regional countries are working to build a new security order based on peace and designed to safeguard the security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
He noted that Türkiye, Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia formed a working group earlier this year to advance that objective and overcome bureaucratic obstacles within formal international institutions.
Fidan said the region must return to a framework in which the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every state are fully recognized.
On international relations and de-escalation efforts, he voiced hope that the United States and Iran will reach a peace agreement through serious negotiations, saying both sides appeared willing to move toward calm.
He nevertheless warned of the risks posed by accidental incidents resulting from misunderstandings over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz or from provocative responses.
Fidan said on Tuesday that the NATO summit in Ankara will help shape the Euro-Atlantic security environment in the coming years and guide the alliance as it adapts its structures to current challenges.
