Damascus, Aug. 31 (SANA) The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Monday that it received a €12 million grant (approximately $14 million) from European Union Humanitarian Aid to sustain essential health services in Syria and support national transition efforts toward recovery.
In a press release, WHO stated that the funding comes amid escalating pressures on health facilities and healthcare personnel driven by changing health needs and surging service demand. The organization highlighted the critical need for continued investment to maintain access to basic healthcare while adapting services to evolving national health priorities.
Utilized in coordination with the Syrian Ministry of Health and health sector partners, the funding will maintain access to primary and secondary healthcare, bolster emergency care, mental health services, and rehabilitation, and strengthen referral networks, disease surveillance, and workforce capacity.
WHO Representative to Syria Dr. Caroline Clarinval stated that Syria’s forward trajectory requires uninterrupted investment in essential health services and infrastructure, emphasizing that EU support will sustain immediate healthcare delivery while building long-term recovery capacity.
The grant will secure essential pharmaceuticals for non-communicable diseases, emergency response, and mental health, alongside hemodialysis supplies, equipment for emergency rooms, operating theaters, and intensive care units, as well as assistive devices for disability and trauma recovery.
Collaboration between the Syrian Ministry of Health and WHO continues across health facility assessments and priority interventions to expand service efficiency and advance universal health coverage.
