Geneva, May 18 (SANA) President Ahmad al-Sharaa said Monday that Syria is seeking to play an active role in strengthening regional and global health security as the country continues a steady path toward recovery and reconstruction.
In a recorded address to the 79th World Health Assembly, President al-Sharaa said the world faces growing challenges that require “a shared international will” placing human health among the highest global priorities.
“I speak to you today from Damascus at a moment when the world faces challenges that require a shared international will that places human health at the forefront of priorities and lays the foundations for a safer and more just future,” the president said.
The annual assembly, held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, brings together delegations from World Health Organization member states to discuss international health policy and global health priorities.
President al-Sharaa said Syria’s participation in the assembly reflects its commitment to contributing to sustainable regional and global health security.
“Our participation in the 79th World Health Assembly underscores that Syria, as it moves steadily along the path of recovery, is playing a pivotal and active role in shaping sustainable regional and global health security,” he said.
Addressing climate and health issues, President al-Sharaa said Syria’s reconstruction efforts aim to establish a sustainable environmental and health framework that protects future generations.
“As your esteemed assembly places the close link between climate change and health at the forefront of its priorities, Syria’s reconstruction process is laying the foundations for a sustainable environmental and health framework that safeguards the security of future generations,” he said.
The president also said Syria had committed to closing displacement camps by 2027, describing the move as part of broader efforts linked to climate and human stability.
“Because human stability is the essence of sustainability, we have committed nationally to closing the chapter of displacement camps by 2027,” President al-Sharaa said.
The president added that Syria’s recovery efforts rely on national capabilities as well as the expertise of Syrians living abroad, whom he described as an essential partner in rebuilding the country alongside international cooperation.
President al-Sharaa said Syria is seeking to establish constructive partnerships based on the exchange of expertise and resources in support of public health and humanitarian cooperation.
“The major challenges we have faced, and which we are overcoming today with resilience, have given our country a strength that makes it a fundamental pillar in protecting global health security,” President al-Sharaa said.
