Damascus, May 17 (SANA) U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said recent developments in Syria marked significant progress, adding that the coming period could bring “tremendous progress for the Syrian people and lasting stability.”
In a post on X on Sunday, Barrack said the “visionary meeting” between U.S. President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia had opened a new chapter, marked by the announcement of sanctions relief aimed at giving Syria “a chance at greatness.”
He added that progress achieved so far had been notable and that future opportunities could lead to significant advancements and long-term stability, describing Syria as “a testing ground for a new regional alignment combining diplomacy, integration, and hope for the entire region.”
Barrack said the process was moving forward under the leadership of President al-Sharaa and through diplomatic efforts led by Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.
On Saturday, President al-Sharaa received Barrack at the People’s Palace in Damascus in the presence of the foreign minister. Talks focused on recent developments in Syria and the region, as well as economic cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.
In May 2025, President al-Sharaa met US President Donald Trump in Riyadh during a landmark meeting attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan joining the talks via video conference.
The meeting underscored the importance of lifting sanctions on Syria, supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts, and exploring Syrian-US cooperation on counterterrorism and regional stability.
