Pedersen renews call to lift sanctions on Syria

Ankara, SANA- Geir Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, renewed his call for lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria and support for its government in various fields.

“The sanctions imposed on Syria must be lifted,” Pedersen said in a speech Saturday during a session titled “Syria A Country of Reconciliation and Reconstruction” at the fourth Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Turkey, he added “We are conducting a good dialogue with the Syrian government, and the international community must extend a helping hand to it so that it can succeed in its reconstruction mission.”

Pederson noted that “President Ahmad al-Sharaa led a country completely destroyed by the defunct regime in terms of security and social stability” therefore, rebuilding this country is difficult articulating that the new Syrian government can’t succeed in stabilizing and maintaining its territorial integrity without the assistance of the international community.

Pederson stressed that “Israel was playing with fire when it uses Syrian airspace and attacks its territory,” noting that these attacks contribute to destabilizing security and stability in the region.
