New York, Apr. 29 (SANA) Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ahmet Yıldız, delivered a scathing condemnation of Israeli occupation military actions in Syria during a high-level UN Security Council session on the Middle East on Tuesday. Speaking on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ambassadors’ group in New York, Yıldız —quoted by Anadolu Agency—categorized the ongoing assaults since December 2024 as flagrant violations of the UN Charter and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
The session, presided over by the Kingdom of Bahrain, featured over 80 speakers and focused on the deteriorating security landscape across Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories.
Ambassador Yıldız highlighted the systematic assaults targeting civilians and infrastructure in Lebanon, and plans to establish what it described as a so-called “safe zone.”
On the Palestinian issue, Yıldız called for holding Israel accountable for violations of international law in Gaza and the West Bank, warning that “the situation in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories remains grave.”
Addressing the UN Security Council, the ambassador urged action to transform the ceasefire in Gaza into a just, lasting and comprehensive solution, end the Israeli occupation, ensure the rights of the Palestinian people, and implement relevant UN resolutions, reaffirming the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s support for advancing the two-state solution.
Addressing the broader regional war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, Yıldız underscored that military action has reached a deadlock and that “diplomacy is the only viable path.”
The session concluded with the Syrian delegation – represented by Syria’s permanent representative to the UN Ibrahim Olabi – echoing the OIC’s calls for an end to external aggressions in Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza.
