New York, April 28 (SANA) Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, addressed the Security Council on Tuesday, highlighting existential threats in the Middle East over the past two months and Syria’s constructive role in maintaining stability to prevent escalation.
During a session on the situation in Middle East, Olabi warned against dangerous escalation and unilateral Israeli actions in the West Bank, urging pressure on the Israeli occupation to lift the siege on Gaza and allow humanitarian aid entry. He reaffirmed Syria’s support for an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and its right to full UN membership.
On Lebanon, Olabi welcomed the ceasefire extension, backed its sovereignty and territorial unity, and emphasized the Lebanese state’s right to monopolize arms.
Turning to Syria, he accused Israeli forces of terrorizing civilians, enforced disappearances, home raids, and ongoing encroachments into and beyond the separation zone, including the Mount Hermon peak—violations of international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. These include uprooting trees and spraying farmland with unknown chemicals, endangering Syrian lives.
“We tell the Israeli occupation and its settlers: Neither incursions, fortifications, nor so-called security zones will change the fact that the occupied Golan is Syrian, the separation zone is Syrian, and Mount Hermon is Syrian,” Olabi declared. He stressed that peace requires addressing occupation roots and implementing UN resolutions.
Olabi also underscored the need to secure UN peacekeepers, especially in Syria and Lebanon, honoring their sacrifices for regional security and stability.
