Brussels, Feb.11(SANA) The European Union reiterated Syria’s pivotal role for security and stability in the region and Europe and the government’s sole role in combating terrorism on its territory.
Speaking Tuesday during a European Parliament session on developments in northeastern Syria, European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica said security risks remain, including the potential resurgence of ISIS. She noted that transferring ISIS detainees to Iraq could help ease pressure on Syria but stressed that the burden on the country remains significant.
Šuica underscored the EU’s continued commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to Syria, adding that aid alone is insufficient and must be complemented by development and recovery programs. She emphasized the importance of continued cooperation with Syria and regional partners to promote security and stability.
