Turkey’s intelligence chief: Attempts to divide Syria are doomed to fail

Ankara, Jan. 06 (SANA) Turkey’s intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalın said that any attempts to divide Syria, weaken its unity or violate its sovereignty are doomed to fail.

Writing in a column published by the state-run Anadolu Agency on the occasion of the 99th anniversary of the establishment of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT), Kalın said Syria has always been a central file in the balance of the Middle East. He described Dec. 8, 2024, as a historic opportunity that marked an irreversible turning point toward a stable future in which the country is governed by Syrians themselves.

Kalın said Turkey’s vision is to support a free, united, sovereign, secure and democratic Syria, noting that such a path would achieve internal peace and strengthen regional stability. He added that all internal and external attempts to weaken Syria’s political unity would fail.

He also stressed Turkey’s role as an international mediator and a humanitarian voice in times of crisis, saying that the intelligence service seeks to continue this role through a model based on preventive intelligence. This approach includes field operations, risk analysis and long-term assessments aimed at identifying threats and thwarting them.

Kalın said Turkish intelligence carried out wide-ranging and successful operations in 2025 to protect the population, managing to foil threats before they occurred, prevent espionage attempts and counter cyberattacks. He added that the agency cooperated with security institutions to disrupt the activities of terrorist organizations and organized crime networks with external backing.

He noted that MİT has expanded its efforts to include cyber defense, achieving notable progress in technical intelligence and cybersecurity while continuously strengthening its defensive infrastructure.
