Damascus, Dec. 8 (SANA) Several senior European officials issued statements on Monday to mark the first anniversary of Syria’s liberation, reaffirming their countries’ commitment to stability, reconstruction, and a Syrian-led political process.
In a message posted on Twitter (X), European Council President António Costa said that Syrians “are advancing toward a more stable and inclusive future” one year after the fall of the Assad regime. He added that the European Union “stands with Syria” and supports a Syrian-led peace process grounded in justice, reconciliation, and the protection of rights.
Costa noted that challenges remain but emphasized the EU’s continued commitment to political dialogue, urgent humanitarian assistance, and long-term reconstruction.
Italy’s Chargé d’Affaires in Damascus, Stefano Ravagnan, also extended congratulations to the Syrian people on Liberation Day, reaffirming Italy’s support for Syria’s economic recovery and the strengthening of state institutions “through the active participation of all components of Syrian society.”
In a separate statement, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot highlighted that the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime a year ago ended “the hell of Saydnaya Prison.” He described the moment as a “point of no return,” stressing that Syria must not return to an era of fear and arbitrariness, and underlined the importance of justice for victims and security for the Syrian people.
In the same context, the British Mission to Syria wrote on X: “One year after the fall of Assad, hope remains at the heart of the story. The United Kingdom continues to support Syria’s path toward peace, prosperity, and stability for all its people.”
