Jordan and UK Foreign Ministers discuss developments in Syria

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in Amman on Monday to discuss developments in Syria and regional peace efforts, the Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported.

According to the agency, the two sides underlined the importance of cooperation in efforts to support Syria’s reconstruction and to safeguard its security and stability.

Safadi reaffirmed Jordan’s position in support of the Syrian government’s efforts to rebuild the country on grounds that preserve its unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens. He also condemned the ongoing Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, reiterating Amman’s rejection of violations of Syria’s sovereignty.

Turning to Gaza, Safadi and Cooper stressed the need for collective international action to uphold the cease-fire agreement and ensure full implementation of its provisions. They emphasized clearing the way to the delivery of humanitarian aids, opening crossings, and enabling United Nations and relief organizations to perform their duties effectively.

The two ministers also discussed linking stability efforts in Gaza to a clear political horizon that would achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.

Earlier in the day, King Abdullah II of Jordan, during his meeting with Cooper, reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for Syria’s security, stability, and territorial integrity.
