The United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee adopted a resolution on Monday recognizing Syria’s cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and calling for international support. The resolution passed with wide international backing, receiving 151 votes in favor.
According to the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the resolution acknowledges the Syrian government’s full and transparent cooperation with the OPCW and highlights its commitment to constructive efforts aimed at enhancing transparency and rebuilding trust.
The ministry said the resolution also praises Syria’s recent practical steps in establishing a genuine partnership with the OPCW, reflecting a clear political will to move past the legacy of the defunct regime and to build a professional framework based on mutual respect. It emphasizes accountability for the use of chemical weapons and urges support for Syria’s ongoing efforts.
During the session, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ibrahim Olabi, expressed gratitude to the countries that supported the resolution, noting that it honors the victims of chemical attacks and acknowledges their suffering. He described the resolution as an important step toward correcting the narrative surrounding Syria and highlighting the truth after years of misinformation.
Ambassador Olabi affirmed that Syria remains committed to cooperating sincerely with the United Nations and the OPCW in line with treaty obligations, promoting regional stability, and upholding the Syrian people’s rights to justice, dignity, and security.
The ministry noted that this resolution is the first of its kind since the fall of the defunct regime, signaling international recognition of the current Syrian government’s position.
