Germany backs Syria's efforts to establish a free and stable state- minister

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Friday that groundwork is being laid for a “free and stable Syria,” adding that Berlin is contributing to this process by lifting all economic sanctions previously imposed on Damascus.

In a series of posts on the Foreign Ministry’s official account on X, Wadephul said Germany and Syria share a “unique relationship,” recalling that many Syrians found refuge in Germany during the war. “For many, it became not only a place of safety but a new home. Today, these individuals are in a position to build bridges between our two peoples,” he wrote.

Wadephul said Germany supported the decision to lift sanctions within the European Union and is encouraging German companies to invest in Syria’s economy.

“The foundations for a free and stable Syria are now being established. We are supporting this effort by lifting all economic sanctions, a move we strongly advocated for within the European Union,” he said.

During his visit to Damascus on Thursday, Wadephul reiterated Germany’s readiness to support Syria’s transitional process and reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to stand by the Syrian people “in their pursuit of stability and self-determination.”

He also highlighted the planned creation of a German-Syrian Economic Council, saying its inaugural meeting is expected to take place before the end of the year.

Wadephul extended an invitation to Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani to visit Berlin.
