The Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Syria and Libya share historic ties, adding that Damascus is keen to restore them in a way that serves the interests of both nations.
A technical delegation from the ministry, tasked with addressing the situation of Syrians in Libya, told SANA that it will visit Libya on Saturday to oversee the technical and administrative preparations necessary for reopening the Syrian Embassy in Tripoli. The reopening will allow citizens to access full consular services – particularly the issuance and renewal of passports – as soon as the embassy resumes operations.
The team will also provide several services to enable Syrians benefit from the government’s decision to waive fines and fees, including the issuance and renewal of travel documents in Tripoli and Benghazi.
The delegation said there remain a number of “outstanding issues that require in-depth coordination with our Libyan brothers,” expressing confidence that both sides can work together to find suitable solutions.
One of the most complex and painful issues, the delegation added, is the case of missing persons. The Syrian government will spare no effort to uncover their fate in cooperation with Libyan authorities.
The ministry, in cooperation with international organizations, is also working to facilitate the voluntary return of Syrian nationals in humanitarian cases from Libya, with a joint program to be implemented in the near future. The delegation confirmed that “there are no Syrian military forces operating outside the country’s borders,” praising the noble and generous people of Libya and stressing that Libya’s stability and development are matters to be decided solely by the Libyan people themselves
