German Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economic Cooperation and Development said that the Syrian People’s Assembly election is an important first step towards broader political participation, stressing Berlin’s continued support for a political process in Syria that includes all components of the country.
A joint statement by the two ministries stated that “after the end of the authoritarian rule of the Assad regime and the tragedies of the war, the Syrian people want to participate in shaping the political future of their country”, noting that “only a few months after the end of the war, a political path based on participation and institutional change began”.
They stressed that the People’s Assembly elections are an important first step towards broader political participation, and it is important that people across Syria are able to participate in the elections, which requires completing the election process in the governorates of Hasakah, Raqqa and Sweida, where elections were not held.
The two ministries called on all parties in Syria to show readiness to accept “compromise solutions that serve the territorial integrity of Syria”, and indicated that the German government is working to support reconstruction and revive the Syrian economy, and plans for the reconstruction of Syria include taking measures in the areas of health, infrastructure, education, water, economic development, and strengthening Administration and the rule of law.
