Qatari prime minister calls Israeli strike on Doha a “dangerous escalation”

Doha, SANA — Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on Sunday condemned the Israeli airstrike on Doha as a “blatant violation” of sovereignty and a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security.

Speaking at the opening session of a preparatory meeting for an emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, Al Thani said the strike hit a residential area that includes diplomatic missions and schools. The attack killed a member of the security forces and wounded several civilians, he said.

Al Thani described the strike as “state terrorism” and a breach of international law, adding that it undermined mediation efforts Qatar has been hosting to ease fighting in Gaza and arrange prisoner releases. He accused Israel of targeting members of the Hamas negotiating team, saying the move was an attack on diplomacy itself.

“The silence of the international community and its failure to hold the occupation accountable only encourages further aggression,” Al Thani said. He vowed that Qatar would take all legal and diplomatic measures to protect its sovereignty.

He also called on Arab and Islamic states to respond firmly, warning that unchecked Israeli actions could fuel more violence across the region. Peace, he said, cannot be achieved without granting Palestinians their rights and establishing a state along the 1967 borders.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also condemned the strike, calling it an act of “cowardice, treachery and foolishness.”

Hissein Brahim Taha, Secretary General of Organization of Islamic Cooperation, expressed solidarity with Qatar and urged stronger Arab-Islamic coordination in response.

The foreign ministers’ meeting, chaired by Al Thani, drew participation from Syria’s foreign minister and counterparts from Arab League and OIC member states. Officials are expected to draft a statement on the Sept. 9 attack, which targeted residences of several Hamas leaders in Doha.
