Geneva, May 28 (SANA) The United Nations warned on Thursday that the world is likely heading toward its hottest five-year period on record, with global temperatures expected to remain at or near historic highs between 2026 and 2030.
According to a new decadal climate outlook issued by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is a 75% probability that average global temperatures over the next five years will exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The report, prepared by the United Kingdom’s national meteorological service, also said there is an 86% chance that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will become the hottest ever recorded, surpassing the current record set in 2024.
The warning comes as Britain this week recorded its hottest May day on record, with temperatures reaching 35.1 degrees Celsius in London during an exceptional heatwave affecting the country.
Scientists say climate change has contributed to the growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across Europe and other parts of the world in recent years.
