Capitals, July 14 (SANA) Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Tuesday condemned the Iranian attack on two UAE-flagged oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, while India summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador to protest the death of an Indian sailor in the incident.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as a serious violation of international law and freedom of navigation, warning that it posed a direct threat to global energy supplies and regional stability.
The ministry said the continued attacks represent a dangerous escalation that undermines efforts to strengthen regional security and called on Iran to immediately cease actions threatening maritime security and international shipping.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs similarly condemned the attack, describing it as a flagrant violation of international law and Security Council Resolution 2817. It called for an immediate end to the escalation and stressed the need to uphold international law and ensure freedom of navigation.
The Gulf Cooperation Council and Bahrain also strongly condemned the attack, reaffirming their solidarity with the United Arab Emirates.
GCC Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi said the attack constituted a serious breach of international law, the principle of freedom of navigation and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2817, urging the international community, particularly the U.N. Security Council, to take decisive action to stop repeated attacks, hold those responsible accountable and safeguard international maritime traffic.
Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack represented a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability and violates international law, the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea and Security Council Resolution 2817. It called on the international community to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and guarantee the safe passage of commercial vessels.
The statements followed the UAE’s announcement that two UAE-flagged oil tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while transiting the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters. The attack killed one Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa and injured eight others, including six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian nationals.
In New Delhi, India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador, Mohammad Javad Hosseini, to formally protest the attack following the death of the Indian sailor and the injuries sustained by other crew members, according to India Today.
