Cairo, June 27 (SANA) Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the framework agreement signed between Lebanon and Israel under US mediation, describing it as an important step toward restoring Lebanese sovereignty and securing a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
In a statement published on X on Saturday, the Arab League said Aboul Gheit made the remarks during a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
According to the statement, Aboul Gheit said the agreement could pave the way for the return of displaced residents, the release of detainees, and the mobilization of international support for the reconstruction of southern Lebanon.
He reaffirmed the Arab League’s full solidarity with Lebanon and its readiness to support the country during what he described as a critical period.
At the same time, Aboul Gheit warned against Israel’s continued provocative policies and attempts to evade its commitments under the agreement. He also stressed the importance of preserving Lebanon’s national unity and urged the Lebanese people to support the state and government in safeguarding civil peace.
Lebanon and Israel signed the US-mediated framework agreement on Friday at the US State Department in Washington after a fifth round of negotiations.
The agreement, signed by the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States in the presence of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, establishes a framework for future agreements aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries and strengthening security and stability along the border.
Under the framework, the Lebanese Armed Forces are expected to restore state authority across Lebanese territory, while a US-backed military coordination mechanism will oversee implementation of the agreement.
