Abu Dhabi, June 26 (SANA) Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Al Budaiwi said on Friday that the Gulf states oppose imposing fees on commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Oman shares the same position.
Speaking to Sky News Arabia, Al Budaiwi said GCC member states had received no information supporting reports that Iran would receive $300 billion in reconstruction funding under a recent memorandum of understanding with the United States.
He also stressed the importance of continued International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) oversight of Iran’s nuclear facilities and called for greater clarity regarding the country’s enriched uranium stockpile.
His remarks came a day after Oman said future arrangements governing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would not include transit charges, reaffirming its commitment to freedom of navigation and the safe passage of vessels in accordance with international law.
Also on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a visit to the Middle East that any future agreement with Iran would take into account the interests of the Gulf Arab states.
