Syria thanks countries supporting UN Resolution on the occupied Golan

Damascus, Dec. 3 (SANA) Syria expressed on Wednesday deep gratitude to the countries that voted in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution on the “Syrian Golan,” which was approved on December 3, 2025. Damascus particularly thanked those who shifted their stance compared to previous years.

In a statement, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates highlighted the significant increase in support, with the number of votes rising from 97 in 2024 to 123 this year. This shift, the Ministry said, underscores growing global backing for Syria’s stance on the Golan and reflects the country’s strengthened diplomatic efforts.

“The broad support for Syria’s national position, particularly regarding its sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan, is clear,” the statement read. “The resolution reaffirms that territory cannot be acquired by force and calls for Israel’s withdrawal from the entire Syrian Golan, in line with the June 4, 1967 borders. It also stresses the illegality of Israeli settlements and other activities in the occupied Golan.”

The resolution reiterates that Israel has yet to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 497, and asserts that the ongoing occupation and de facto annexation of the Golan remain significant obstacles to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.

Syria also extended special thanks to the Arab Republic of Egypt for submitting the draft resolution and expressed appreciation for the countries that have consistently voted in favor of the resolution, year after year.

The Syrian government also commended a broad group of countries that showed their support for the resolution this year, France, Ireland, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Denmark, Finland, Gabon, Germany, Grenada, Guatemala, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Nepal, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Moldova, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Timor-Leste, Ukraine, Tanzania, Uruguay, Vanuatu, and those countries that shifted their vote from abstention to support, thereby demonstrating their respect for international law and the UN Charter, which has always been clear and unequivocal on the issue of occupation and the inadmissibility of acquiring territory by force.

Syria also noted with particular gratitude those nations that changed their vote from abstention to support, demonstrating their respect for international law and the UN Charter, which has consistently rejected the acquisition of territory by force.

In closing, Syria reiterated that its commitment to engaging in discussions on technical matters related to regional security does not alter its firm position that the Golan remains an integral part of Syrian territory, a stance it continues to advocate for through international diplomatic channels.
