Justice Minister: Issue of Missing Persons in Syria Remains an Urgent National Priority

Damascus, SANA–Minister of Justice Mazhar al-Wais affirmed that the issue of forcibly disappeared persons in Syria remains an urgent national priority, requiring every effort to uncover their fate, hold those involved in these crimes accountable, and take legal measures to redress the harm and alleviate the suffering of victims’ families.

In a post on (X) marking the International Day of the Disappeared, the minister stressed the importance of shedding light on this humanitarian issue, which represents one of the harshest crimes and grave violations committed by the former regime against innocent people.

The Justice Minister renewed his call to all national and international institutions and civil society organizations to cooperate and support efforts to uncover the truth, achieve justice for the victims, and preserve their memory as part of the Syrian people’s history and suffering.

Syria joins the international community in commemorating the International Day of the Disappeared by reaffirming that this issue will remain a national priority that cannot be closed without justice for the victims, truth disclosure, and restoring dignity to their families.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates stated that the establishment of the Syrian National Commission for the Missing reflects the national will to address this issue through an independent framework, stressing Syria’s moral, national, and humanitarian commitment to one of the most complex tragedies that has burdened the Syrian people for decades.
