Kyiv/Moscow, Oct. 27 (SANA) A truce between Ukraine and Russia took effect early Tuesday in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky to allow a humanitarian operation to deliver aid to residents in the Russian-controlled city, while shelling continued in other areas.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on its Telegram channel: “As part of preparations for a humanitarian operation in the Oleshky area of Kherson Region, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have ceased fire in the sector.”
Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets said in a Telegram post that the truce was part of a humanitarian mission being conducted in cooperation with Russia’s human rights commissioner, Yana Lantratova, with U.S. mediation and coordination.
The truce is intended to enable a humanitarian operation in the isolated city, where residents have been trapped for weeks and face shortages of food and medicine.
U.S. first lady Melania Trump announced last Friday that the truce was intended to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Russia said on Monday it was ready to agree to similar humanitarian truces and expressed appreciation for the efforts of U.S. negotiators.
The duration of the truce in Oleshky has not been clearly specified, although Russian officials said it could last several days.
The city and its residents continue to face the threat of explosive drones operated by both Russian and Ukrainian forces that target vehicles. Roads leading to Oleshky are also reportedly booby-trapped with land mines.
