Kyiv, Oct. 4 (SANA) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, saying Germany was ready for talks on bringing the conflict to an end.
“Mr. Putin, stop this senseless war. We are ready for talks, we are ready to discuss an end to this war, but these attacks on Ukrainian civilians must stop,” Merz said during a visit to Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, according to German broadcaster ZDF.
Merz said recent attacks on the Ukrainian capital underscored what he called the senselessness of the war, noting that the academy is in central Kyiv, a few hundred meters from the German Embassy.
Air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv on Sunday morning. Merz described the attacks in Ukraine as “war crimes being committed here every day.”
Three people were wounded Saturday in Russian shelling of the Dnipropetrovsk region in central Ukraine.
Russia and Ukraine have continued exchanging strikes, with recent attacks targeting logistics and oil facilities and other critical infrastructure in both countries.
