Paris, March 13 (SANA) French President Emmanuel Macron announced Friday that a French soldier was killed in an attack on a joint military base in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
Macron identified the soldier as Corporal Arnaud Fréon, who “died for France during an attack in Erbil,” according to a statement shared on X and reported by Agence France-Presse.
Describing the assault on French forces as “unacceptable,” Macron emphasized that France’s military presence in Iraq is part of the ongoing fight against terrorism. He added that the conflict in Iran does not justify such attacks.
The announcement follows Thursday’s report from the French Armed Forces General Staff, which said six French soldiers were injured in a drone strike targeting Erbil.
This latest attack highlights the ongoing risks posed by the regional conflict between the U.S. and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.
