Beijing, Sep. 10 (SANA) At least 25 people were killed and five others injured Thursday after a fire broke out aboard a foreign cargo ship in the Beihai Shipbuilding Co. at the port of Qingdao, a major shipping hub on the northeastern Chinese coast.

Xinhua News Agency, citing local authorities, reported that the fire broke out while the ship, which was carrying 42 people, was undergoing maintenance. The blaze left 25 people dead, according to the authorities.

Twelve people were safely evacuated, while five injured people were taken to a hospital for treatment, the sources added.

Emergency, firefighting, rescue, police and medical teams were mobilized to conduct search-and-rescue operations following the incident.

Beihai Shipbuilding is a subsidiary of the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the world’s largest shipbuilder. The company specializes in commercial shipbuilding, vessel modification, and ship repair services.
