Beijing, Sept. 6 (SANA) Chinese authorities announced on Sunday that 43 people have been killed and 519 remain missing following a high-altitude glacier collapse that triggered a massive landslide near a border crossing with Nepal in southwestern China.
Citing emergency response and rescue authorities in Xizang Autonomous Region, Xinhua reported that the landslide struck the Gyirong port area along the China–Nepal border.
Authorities noted that China provided relief assistance to 1,720 Nepali border residents following the disaster. More than 2,500 personnel and over 500 vehicles have been deployed to search and rescue operations, while drones completed over 1,000 flights to airdrop 5.43 tons of essential supplies.
Numerous Nepali residents working or conducting business in Gyirong County were stranded after the landslide destroyed the border crossing point connecting the two nations.
The disaster follows severe flash floods, mudslides, and rockfalls that swept through Himalayan border regions on Aug. 26, causing heavy casualties, infrastructure destruction, and communication blackouts. Separately, two people were killed and ten remain missing after a mudslide struck Ji’an in eastern China’s Jiangxi Province earlier Sunday.
