New York, Aug. 13 (SANA) UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for greater investment in young people and a stronger role for them in decision-making, saying their leadership and skills are critical to tackling global challenges and advancing sustainable development.

In a message marking International Youth Day, Guterres said this year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations” reflects young people’s common hopes for dignity and equal opportunities despite the different circumstances they face around the world.

He pointed to economic uncertainty, digital inclusion and climate change as major challenges that cross national borders and require coordinated international action.

Guterres said young people are already at the forefront of innovation and organization and called for greater efforts to equip them with critical-thinking, problem-solving and digital skills needed for the future.

Treating young people as equal partners could help countries harness their demographic potential and accelerate progress toward sustainable development, he said.

The UN chief also urged governments and institutions to give young people a greater voice in decision-making at the local, national and international levels, while reaffirming the United Nations’ support for inclusive investment in youth.

International Youth Day is observed annually to highlight issues affecting young people and promote their participation in development. Efforts include tackling youth unemployment and narrowing the digital divide, which continues to limit access to education and employment opportunities for millions of young people in developing countries.
